01. Roles & Responsibilities

01. Roles & Responsibilities

I was the lead User Experience Architect on this project. I worked with a product owner, UI designer, business stakeholders from several different teams, and a team of app developers. After the initial research project, I was responsible for any further research, wireframes, documentation, and prototypes.

02. The Process

02. The Process

Offers & Messages was a highly collaborative project involving several different business teams. Since there was so many moving parts I was responsible for making sure we not only were we meeting the needs of the users, but we met all of the complex needs to display bonus offers, custom coupons, and targeted marketing messages.

Phase One
Offers & Messages was only one part of a bigger app redesign effort. This project started with a large case study that concentrated on learning how Ulta’s rewards members understood the rewards program. It was a moderated test that was conducted by a UX researcher with whom I collaborated throughout the design process.

I started the Offers & Messages with a whiteboarding session with the collection of different teams I was designing for. Our goal was to make one unified spot for users to be able to find all their offers. For phase one I concentrated on relocating existing functionality to better serve Ulta’s users. I designed a tabbed inbox experience in which testing proved that users loved having all their deals in one inbox. Once I began wireframing it was quickly realized that this project would have to be broken up into multiple releases due to all the new functionality that would need to be created.

Phase Two
For phase two I wanted to bring more visual elements to the phase one functionality and I worked closely with several of the different teams to create new functionality for targeted coupons. For this project, I created wireframes, high fidelity interactive prototypes for testing, and conducted several rounds of unmoderated user testing. I worked closely with the UX Researcher for a larger moderated user test to make sure we were meeting the needs of users for the overall app redesign. Findings continued to show that users loved how easy this would make their shopping experience. Once the design was vetted and annotated, I worked closely with the development team to ensure the design was properly implemented.

Phase One was released in October of 2019 to Ulta’s millions of app users. Phase two will be released in Feb of 2020.

Update
In 2023 Ulta went through a brand redesign and my designs for offers & messages received an update to the UI. The new designs are below.
